Visiting students and those in the study program for senior citizens

General information

Visiting students — generally — are registered for the individual courses they select from the LMU course catalog. Visiting students — who select their courses from the course catalog offered by the Zentrum Seniorenstudium — are registered as visiting students in the study program for senior citizens.

Fees are charged to visiting students and visiting students in the study program for senior citizens.

Upon registration, visiting students and visiting students in the study program for senior citizens do not become members of the University. They are not eligible to take any examinations.

On principle, visiting students and visiting students in the study program for senior citizens must possess the same qualification as degree students, i.e. a higher education entrance qualification or a subject-specific higher education entrance qualification. Further information concerning vocationally qualified applicants can be found at Hochschulzugang für qualifizierte Berufstätige (in German).

With regard to the qualification requirements, there is one exception: LMU does accept gifted high school students who are working towards a higher education entrance qualification.

Foreign or stateless applicants without a German higher education entrance qualification must present a qualification certificate equivalent to a German higher education entrance qualification. They must also show an adequate knowledge of the German language.

Visiting students

Due to the current pandemic, first-time registration for the summer semester 2021 will not take place in person. This applies to both visiting students and visiting students in the study program for senior citizens. Please submit your completed registration form and other required documents for your first-time registration either by post or drop them off in our mailbox at LMU’s main entrance. You have until 25 March 2021 to do so.

Visiting students should select the courses they want to register for from the LMU online course catalog called Online-Vorlesungsverzeichnis LSF. The individual courses desired should be written on the registration- and identification forms. You should include the official course number and the number of hours per week per semester.

Important note on the continuation of registration procedure:

Due to technical and administrative reasons, the continuation of registration is currently only available to those visiting students who are registered as visiting students for the winter semester 2020/21 at LMU Munich.

For visiting students who have already registered once as a visiting student at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and who have not applied for the continuation of registration for the following semester (e.g. because they wanted to take a break for one or more semesters but intended to register again at a later date as a visiting student) there continues to be an automated re-registration procedure. This is similar to the one for the continuation of registration:

In order to apply for re-registration, in the formal manner required and by the specified deadline, you must:

  • transfer the progressive fee (the amount is determined by the number of hours per week per semester registered for, see below).
  • state your registration number. We will mail your identification card to you on time before the start of the lecture period, as is the case with the continuation of registration.

Please note: The identification card will be mailed to you and entitles you to attend courses corresponding to the fee amount you transferred for the total number of hours per week per semester. On the identification card mailed to you, you must enter the official course number as well as the respective number of hours per week per semester of the courses you selected. You must personally sign the identification card and always carry it with you as proof of your registration while attending your courses.

The procedures introduced here for the continuation of registration and re-registration do not apply to applicants:

  • who were never registered at LMU Munich.
  • who want to register for individual courses as visiting students in the study program for senior citizens or as degree students.

These procedures also do not apply to:

  • gifted students
  • as well as visiting students who are simultaneously registered at another university and need the study program for visiting students in order to complete their studies according to the study and examination regulations of their home university. (Please submit a confirmation issued by the examination office of that university.)

since these students are exempt from paying any fees.

The following progressive fees apply to visiting students based on the number of hours per week per semester:

  • in order to attend courses with a total of fewer than five hours per week per semester: 100 euros
  • in order to attend courses with a total of five to eight hours per week per semester: 200 euros
  • in order to attend courses with a total of more than eight hours per week per semester: 300 euros

The fee is due at the time of registration and the amount corresponds to the total number of hours per week per semester of the courses you register for. You will receive further information about the payment details at the time of your registration in person.

As part of your continuation of registration or re-registration, please transfer the fee due referencing the intended purpose.

Fees can neither be refunded in full nor in part. There are no fee reductions or fee waivers available.

No fees are charged to students attending other universities if — according to a legal regulation or an agreement between the universities — they register as visiting students for the purpose of completing those parts of their degree program at LMU Munich that are offered here.

Gifted students who register as visiting students at LMU Munich are exempt from paying any fees as well.

Visiting students in the study program for senior citizens

Visiting students — who select their courses from the course catalog offered by the Zentrum Seniorenstudium — are registered as visiting students in the study program for senior citizens.

Visiting students in the study program for senior citizens may register for the first time, and apply for a continuation of registration and/or a re-registration.

Students may apply for a first registration only if they are registering for the first time as a visiting student in the study program for senior citizens at LMU Munich.

Students can apply for a continuation of registration, if they were registered as a visiting student in the study program for senior citizens during the immediately preceding semester.

Students can apply for a re-registration, if they were previously registered as a visiting student in the study program for senior citizens at LMU Munich and — after taking a break for one or more semesters — wish to register again as a visiting student in the study program for senior citizens.

Due to the current situation, first-time registration will not take place in person for visiting students in the study program for senior citizens for the summer semester 2021. Please submit your completed registration form and the required documents for your first-time registration by mail or put them into our mailbox at LMU’s main entrance by 25 March 2021 at the latest.

On principle, students must apply for the first registration in person during the specified registration period. As far as registration by an authorized representative is concerned, the relevant legal regulations apply. The authorized representative must prove his or her identity by presenting an official photo ID and have written authorization to do so at the time of registration at LMU.

Visiting students in the study program for senior citizens select the courses they want to register for from the course catalog offered by the Zentrum Seniorenstudium. The individual courses must be written on both the registration- and identification form along with the official four-digit course number and the number of hours per week per semester.
