Libraries

LMU Munich has an excellent library system. Along with the Main Library as a scientific universal library and its subject libraries, LMU boasts numerous smaller libraries in individual departments as well as partnerships with other libraries in Munich. It is also part of a Germany-wide network of university libraries. There is hardly any book you can't find!

University Library (UB)

The University Library (UB) of LMU consists of the UB services in the LMU main building at Geschwister-Scholl-Platz 1 as well as several learning centers and subject libraries throughout the city. As a central service facility, it provides access to a high-quality portfolio of printed and electronic academic literature. The total collection comprises around five million items. The vast majority of the holdings of the library system are listed in the Online Catalog (OPAC, Online Public Access Catalog).

Your LMUcard also serves as your library card. For new library accounts, a default password is preset, which you must change for security reasons. Information about your library account and how to reset your password can be found on the UB website.

The Bavarian State Library (StaBi)

With your LMUcard, you can also borrow materials from the Bavarian State Library (“BSB,” also known as “StaBi”). It is located at Ludwigstraße 16, just a stone’s throw from the UB. The StaBi is one of the best and largest libraries in Europe.

As with the University Library, you can borrow books and media via the Online Catalog. You will find your library number on the back of your LMUcard.

The Online Catalog and borrowing books

Once you have your LMUcard, you can order, reserve and renew books from the University Library or the Bavarian State Library through their respective electronic online catalogs (OPAC systems).

Please note: If you don't have a German registration address when you pick up your LMUcard, you can only use media in the UB or State Library reading rooms. Taking resources off site is not possible.

How can I borrow books?

  • The libraries offer several OPAC terminals where you can search for and order books via the Online Catalog. Of course, you can also access each library's OPAC system online through their respective home pages.
  • Books are delivered to the libraries' collection areas where you can check them out.

What do I need to bear in mind?

  • There are no open magazines at the UB or StaBi. After your order it will take a few days before you can pick up your books. Be sure to order in advance! When your order is confirmed you can see its delivery date in your library account.
  • If you would like to borrow a law textbook or general computer science handbooks from the Lernzentrum Leo 13, you can drop by, take it off the shelf yourself and loan it out directly. In this case, a prior order via the Online Catalog is not necessary.
  • Subject libraries generally have books and journals that you can access directly, and most of them can be borrowed immediately. You can also read, scan, or copy the books on site.

Electronic media

The UB provides not only printed literature for LMU students, but also an extensive range of electronic media (e-books, e-journals and databases). In order to access them, you must first authenticate yourself by means of your LMU user ID via the e-media login on the UB website. Then you can access e-books and electronic journal articles directly.

The StaBi also provides a wide range of electronic media for your use. In order to use them, you must register in the StaBi Online Catalog with your library number (on the back of your LMUcard).

Training and e-tutorials

The UB offers numerous general and subject-specific training courses demonstrating how to search for literature or use programs for literature administration. For a quick overview while you wait, there are a number of different e-tutorials to help you.

Information about the lockers

Lockers for your jackets and bags are located in the immediate vicinity of all library locations. They are managed by the LMU property management department. Jackets and coats do not have to be locked away.

At many locations, you will need your own padlock to use a locker.

Please bring your own locks to the following library locations:

  • Specialized library for biology and biomedicine
  • Specialized library for chemistry and pharmacy
  • English Garden Specialized Library
  • Specialized library for earth sciences
  • Specialized library for mathematics and physics
  • Philologicum Specialized Library
  • Specialized library for law
  • Specialized library for theology and philosophy
  • Specialized library for economics and statistics
  • Library wing in the LMU main building (building section F)

At all other library locations, you will need a 2-euro coin as a deposit or a deposit coin to use a locker. The lockers in the Veterinary Medicine Library are an exception: here, the locker keys are charged to your library account.

The LMU's day lockers must be emptied in the evening.
