Career development

Before starting, during, and toward the end of a doctoral project, questions about career goals and setting a course for the future may arise. You can take advantage of various support services to help you make decisions and plan your next steps.

Decision making

By the end of their doctoral studies at the latest, doctoral researchers are faced with the question of what to do after graduation: pursue a career in academia or look for opportunities beyond an academic career? What chances and challenges do the respective options offer, and what paths can be taken to achieve one's individual goals?

Events

The GraduateCenterLMU regularly offers events for doctoral candidates in the final stages of their doctorates that address the question, “What comes after the doctorate?” Depending on the format, participants reflect on their individual skills, interests, and goals and receive guidance on developing career prospects both within and outside academia.
In the workshops, we provide a space for orientation and exchange — and support you in consciously and strategically planning your next steps after your doctorate.

Coaching

Are you unsure about what to do after completing your doctorate, or would you like to rethink your current plans? The GraduateCenterLMU offers early-career researchers the opportunity to discuss individual career planning questions through a coaching session. This confidential conversation provides a space to reflect on your strengths and goals, explore different career paths, and develop the right next steps.

Academic careers

If you are interested in pursuing a career in academia, you should familiarize yourself with the possible career paths (postdoc, habilitation, junior professor, junior research group leader, etc.) and the framework conditions of the academic system.

Information on academic careers can be found on the LMU Academic Career Portal, and also here:
