Bachelor's thesis registration

  • As soon as the admission requirements have been met, this will be indicated at the bottom of the Transcript of Records (this process does not set a deadline in motion!).
  • Transcript of records is submitted to the department chair; supervision and topic of the bachelor's thesis are arranged.
  • Registration form which indicates the bachelor thesis title, processing time etc. is filled out by the chair's office, signed by both parties and submitted to the ISC by the supervisor not the student.
  • The 8 week writing period begins on the day on which the topic is assigned and not before.
  • The start of the thesis processing period is set up by the supervising chair and student. The processing period should be arranged so that the assessment of the thesis can be completed at least two weeks before the end of the semester and the grade be recorded by the ISC. This must be clarified with the supervising chair before the start of the thesis. Students who choose a period of time in which the end of the processing time is shortly before or directly at the end of the semester are not entitled to an accelerated correction of the thesis.
  • Sample statement of declaration
  • Sample title page for bachelor's thesis (PDF, 91 KB)

Assignment of topics

  • The final topic is assigned by the professor.
  • The bachelor's thesis topic itself can only be given back once and only within two weeks of registration.

Deadlines

  • The processing time for the bachelor's thesis is limited to 8 weeks from the official date of topic allocation by the chair.
  • An extension of processing time may be applied for, if a case arises for which the student can not be held accountable, e.g. illness. This must be substantiated, e.g. by a medical certificate - see illness/inability to take examinations in the alphabetical index.

Bachelor

The standard period of study for a Bachelor's degree is six semesters. The maximum duration of study is eight semesters.
The basic and orientation examinations (GOP) must be passed at the end of the first semester. If one or both GOPs have not been passed, each of the module examinations can be repeated once and at the latest on the next regular date. A regular date corresponds to the offering cycle of an abstract course in the examination and study regulations (Annex 2, column 6 "offered in").
The Bachelor's examination has been definitively failed and the examination can no longer be continued if:

  • the repetition of one or both GOPs was graded as insufficient or is deemed to have been graded as insufficient
  • the 180 ECTS credits from the modules have not been acquired in accordance with the regulations by the end of the eighth semester at the latest

Master

The standard period of study for the Master's programme is four semesters. The maximum duration of study is six semesters.
The Master's examination has been definitively failed and the examination can no longer be continued if the 120 ECTS credits have not been earned by the end of the sixth semester at the latest.

Minor

The required 30 or 60 ECTS credits must be acquired in the correct composition by the end of the second semester after the end of the standard period of study for the major subject at the latest. If this is not the case, the respective minor subject is deemed to have been definitively failed.

Deadline Extension

An application for an extension of the deadline must be submitted in writing to the ISC before the deadline expires. Deadline extensions will only be granted if there are reasons for which you are not responsible, such as illness. You will receive written notification of the deadline extension.

  • In the case of examinations consisting of several parts (e.g. written examination and presentation), the final grade is the average (arithmetical median) of the partial grades.
  • The final grade is calculated to two decimal places.
  • Up to 4.00 the grade is "passed", above 4.00 (i.e. from 4.01) the final grade is 5.0 (failed).
  • A partial grade of 5.0 can therefore be counterbalanced.
  • However, this does not apply if the student does not take part in a partial examination for reasons for which he/she is responsible; in this case, the entire examination is assessed with a grade of 5.0.

Business Administration / Business Education

Graduation documents are printed on a monthly basis. The date of issue is always the last working day of the month in question, provided that the last grade is posted by around the middle of the month in question.

Graduation documents automatically go to print and do not need to be requested. As soon as the documents have been finalized/signed and are ready to be collected, the ISC will notify you at your campus email address. Collection takes place in our office (room 023).

Economics

Graduation documents are printed monthly. The deadline by which all grades must be submitted to the ISC is the last Wednesday of each month. Please note: no printing in August.

Documents are generated automatically, i.e. you do not need to request them.

Documents are then finalised, signed and are presumably ready for pick up by the middle of the following month. You will be informed via campus email as soon as your documents are ready.

Collection takes place in the ISC office (room 020).

The Diploma Supplement (DS) is an essential component of the Bachelor's degree graduation documents. The DS allows for a comparison of different degree programs and contains a description of the field of study.

E

ECTS is the abbreviation for European Credit Transfer System.

1 ECTS point corresponds to a student workload of approx. 30 working hours.

The total workload per semester is approximately 900 working hours. The calculation of the total workload includes the courses, the time for preparation and follow-up work both in class and in self-study, the examination workload, the examination preparation including the academic work to be completed.

ECTS points are ultimately weighting factors for grades. ECTS points are only awarded for passed examinations.

Example: A grade of 2.3 with 6 ECTS means that the grade 2.3 is included in the overall grade calculation with 6 times the weighting.

These ECTS-Grading tables ("rankings") show the distribution of the final grades (passing marks) of the respective degrees in the named degree programme. The calculation is based on the final grades of those graduates whose certificates were issued in the defined reference period.

Unfortunately, prior rankings of the overall grade cannot be issued due to a lack of comparability in the student accounts (no standardised grades and points due to permanent dynamics: grades for repeat examinations or final theses are received, changes may occur after examination reviews, overall grades may change due to a reduction in points, etc.). This is only possible upon completion of the degree programme.

A semester ranking will only be issued upon request to the ISC if this is absolutely necessary, e.g. for a scholarship application. The compelling necessity must be proven.

After taking a module examination or partial module examination, there is a post-exam review. The time and place as well as the (registration) procedure for post-exam reviews is announced by the chairs. Please inform yourself about the respective inspection date in LSF or Moodle.

Additional or substitute dates cannot be granted!

You can find information about exmatriculation on the website of the Office of the University Registrar.

Standard period of study is 6 semesters.

  1. The Bachelor's examination is deemed to have been taken for the first time and failed if the standard period of study is exceeded by more than one semester for reasons for which the student is responsible, and
  2. terminally failed if the standard period of study is exceeded by more than two semesters for reasons for which the student is responsible.

The Bachelor's examination is definitively failed if

  1. the basic and orientation examination or
  2. the module examination or a partial module examination of one of the planned compulsory modules or required compulsory elective modules has been taken but not passed and there is no longer an opportunity to retake it.

Master

The standard period of study is 4 semesters.

  1. The Master's examination is deemed to have been taken for the first time and failed if the standard period of study is exceeded by more than one semester for reasons for which the student is responsible, and
  2. terminally failed if the standard period of study is exceeded by more than two semesters for reasons for which the student is responsible.

The Master's examination is definitively failed if the module examination or a partial module examination of one of the planned compulsory modules or required compulsory elective modules has been taken but not passed and there is no longer an opportunity to retake it.

Business Administration / Business Education

A graduation ceremony is held once per semester in the university's Great Auditorium. The ceremony is organised by Wasti e.V. in cooperation with LMU Management Almuni.

The ISC is not involved in the graduation ceremony. Graduates do not receive their graduation diploma at the graduation ceremony.

Further information can be found on the Wasti website or on the Almuni website.

Economics

The annual graduation ceremony for Bachelor students is held in June/July. For the exact date and invitation, please keep an eye on our website (www.econ.lmu.de).

The graduation ceremony for Master students will be held at the annual opening of the MGSE in the beginning of October. For the exact date and invitation, please keep an eye on our website (www.econ.lmu.de).

Please apply to the Student Advisory Service in good time for a semester credit transfer certificate, which you will need to apply for a higher semester. Please refer to the information sheet and our application form (PDF, 362 KB) for credits under Forms and Templates.

1. Inability to take examinations

Students who are unable to take an exam due to acute illness or who abort an exam due to illness must immediately see their family doctor/specialist in-person, i.e. on the day of the exam at the latest, and provide confirmation of their illness and its estimated duration.

Please refer to our form template with information on the requirements for medical certifcates. This completed form and a written request for withdrawal must be submitted immediately to the ISC, Ludwigstraße 28, front bldg., room 023 (Business Studies) or room 020 (Economics) in the original. In the case of hospitalisation, a corresponding confirmation from the clinic is sufficient.

As a rule the inability to take an exam must be claimed and substantiated immediately or at the latest before the grades are announced; in the case of a GOP extension, it must be applied for immediately but before the corresponding deadline (informal written application, email does not fulfil the required written form).

In the case of long term illness, please contact the Student Advisory Service.

2. Illness during thesis processing period

Students who fall ill while working on their thesis must provide evidence of their inability to continue during that time as described under 1.1 and may apply for a deadline extension within the framework of the respective examination regulations.

Please note: Important information on extending Bachelor's and Master's theses in the event of illness (Notification: Different deadlines for PStO 2024)

As a rule, in the event of repeated and/or prolonged incapacity to take examinations, a clarifying discussion with the Student Advisory Service is required.

The option to improve grades is only available when studying under the “old” PStO! This section does not apply to the PStO 2024.

  • What is a free examination attempt (FPV)?
An examination attempt taken for the first time within the standard period of study which has not been passed is deemed not to have been taken (= "free"); relevant if the number of retake options is limited
  • Is it possible to improve a grade?
A passed module examination can be repeated once to improve the grade on the next regular date
  • Are modules excluded from grade improvement?
    Yes: the final thesis
  • Which grade counts?
    The better grade
  • How often can a module grade be improved?
    Once
  • Which examination is counted if the grades are the same?
    the one taken later
  • Are there deadlines by when you must/can retake an examination to improve your grade?
    on the next regular date
  • What does "next regular date" mean?
The next date on which the abstract course/module is read/offered again or on which the module examination is offered again.
  • If several concrete courses are offered for a module or an abstract course, what should I bear in mind?
The grade from the module examination is improved, i.e. the grade from the examination for course 1 can be replaced by a better grade from one of the other courses (2, 3 or 4) of this module in the next term; please note that each module can only be taken once.
  • If I am on leave of absence, can I take a module examination to improve my grade?
No, as only failed examinations may be repeated during the semester of leave
  • When does an attempt to improve my grade make sense?
If you have slipped up; otherwise additional workload
  • How do I proceed if I want to improve my grade from a module examination?
Re-register in LSF for the module or exam that has already been taken once
  • What happens if I miss the registration?
A grade improvement is only possible with registration

The option to improve grades is only available when studying under the “old” PStO! This section does not apply to the PStO 2025.

A passed examination (with the exception of the Bachelor's and Master's thesis) can be repeated once to improve the grade and at the latest on the next regular date. A regular date corresponds to the frequency of an abstract course in the examination and study regulations (Annex 2).

Please note:

  • The better grade will be counted; in the event of equal grades, the grade achieved later will be counted.
  • It is not possible to repeat a passed examination to improve your grade during a semester of leave.
  • In courses with limited capacity (e.g. advanced seminars), students who are taking the respective course or the associated module for the first time have priority.
  • Repeating passed examinations to improve your grades can extend the duration of your studies, as the workload increases significantly!
  • In order to repeat a passed examination to improve your grade, you must re-register for the examination in the relevant module in LSF by the next regular date at the latest. A regular date corresponds to the frequency of an abstract course in the examination and study regulations (Annex 2).
  • In the economics elective modules in the Bachelor's degree program in Economics or in the Master's degree program in Economics, the grade improvement attempt in the respective module is specifically made by taking an elective exam of another name than in the first attempt.
  • The VWL elective modules comprise of 6 ECTS credits (6 or 12 ECTS credits in the Master's degree program) and are regarded as completed when you pass the module examination. If you register for several examinations in one module, the regulations for grade improvement apply; meaning only one exam counts and any extra ECTS points are lost.
  • Therefore, please ensure that you normally only register for one examination per module!

Introductory/orientation events are organised every year for first-year students. You can find more information on the O-Phase website.

Voluntary internships (in Germany or abroad) are only recognised as a reason for leave of absence if the following requirements are met:

  • In any case, two thirds of the internship (at least 9 weeks) overlaps with the lecture period;
  • The internship is related to the degree program;
  • The standard period of study for the degree program has not yet been exceeded.

The Office of the University Registrar will only grant you leave of absence for an internship if you submit a corresponding authorisation for leave of absence. You will need the following documents:

  • Internship contract;
  • specific job description (job description).

You can obtain the authorisation from Student Advisory Service after submitting the relevant documents.

Please note:

  • Endorsements for the summer semester are only issued by April 30th, for the winter semester by October 30th!
  • No endorsements will be issued without submission of a signed job description from the company!
  • An internship certificate or confirmation does not replace an internship contract!
  • You can only be granted leave of absence for ONE semester within your degree program for voluntary internships in accordance with the rules outlined above.

Please also note the further information under the keyword Leave of Absence.

If it is not possible to obtain professional approval for the internship in individual cases, “Career Service” may be the next point of contact for confirmation of the leave of absence.

Please also note the following for internships abroad:

The amended Higher Education Statistics Act, which came into force on March 2, 2016, obliges all state universities to collect differentiated data on study-related stays abroad from their students and to forward this anonymised data to the state/federal statistical offices.

As part of their participation, students are obliged to record all study-related stays abroad (study abroad, internships, other). The "Study abroad" function is available in LSF for this purpose.

The Office of the University Registrar is responsible for the actual leave of absence. Further information on the regulations can be found on the website of the Student Office.

A voluntary internship is only recognised as a reason for leave of absence if the following requirements are met:

  • The internship takes up at least nine weeks of the lecture period.
  • The internship is related to the degree program.

The ISC will be happy to issue you with the necessary confirmation that the voluntary internship is related to your degree program and is approved under the following conditions:

  • The confirmation can (as a rule) only be issued to students who have completed at least the first-year program.
  • The confirmation can only be issued as long as you are studying within the standard period of study.

To issue the confirmation, we require a copy of the internship contract or confirmation from the internship center about the period and content of the internship. It should be clear from the contract or confirmation that the internship is relevant to the area of study.

If it is not possible to obtain subject-specific approval for the internship in individual cases, "Career Service" may be the next point of contact for confirmation of leave of absence.

Please also note the following for internships abroad:

The amended Higher Education Statistics Act, which came into force on March 2, 2016, obliges all state universities to collect differentiated data on study-related stays abroad from their students and to forward this anonymised data to the state/federal statistical offices.

  • To submit a thesis on time, it is currently sufficient to upload it in electronic form via the web form on the ISC homepage by 12 noon on the day of submission. The thesis is then regarded as officially submitted to the ISC. The date of submission is the date stated on the registration form. Print versions do not have to be submitted until further notice.
  • The electronic version of the thesis can be uploaded via the web form up to a file size of 11 MB. Upon successful submission, you will receive an automatic email confirmation.
  • For file sizes >11 MB, please contact the ISC before the submission deadline.
  • Please note that the thesis needs to include a statutory declaration / declaration statement (PDF, 61 KB). The declaration needs to be included in German, even if your thesis was written in English.
  • Please note the following information on repeating a thesis:
    • In accordance with the examination and study regulations, a failed thesis (if not submitted on time or graded 5.0) can generally be repeated once at the next regular deadline.
    • If the submission date of your thesis is in your 8th semester (Bachelor's thesis) or 6th semester (Master's thesis), this thesis is considered the second attempt in accordance with the examination and study regulations and you no longer have the opportunity to repeat it in this case.
  • Inability to take examinations: Please note the following information regarding the extension of deadlines for final theses:

Credits earned in other degree programs at LMU or at other state or state-recognized universities (including VHB) can be recognized, unless the skills acquired differ significantly. The comparison of acquired competencies is carried out on a subject-specific level. In addition, it is always checked on a module-specific basis whether the learning outcomes achieved can also be classified as equivalent with regard to methodological, social-communicative or action- and activity-based aspects.

If the coursework to be credited was completed before enrolment at LMU (e.g. in the case of a change of university), the application for credit transfer must be submitted by the end of the first semester after enrollment.

If the work to be credited was completed after enrollment at LMU (e.g. in the case of studying abroad or double degree programs), the application for credit transfer must be submitted by the end of the following semester after the ECTS points have been earned.

Please do keep in mind the information sheet (PDF, 195 KB) and our application form (PDF, 362 KB) for credit transfer under "Forms and Templates".
In order for your application to be processed, please submit the following documents to the ISC Office by the deadline (please send everything digitally in PDF form to anrechnungen@som.lmu.de).

  1. the fully completed and signed application form: please always specify the exact module that is to be checked for credit transfer! Please use the information from the current guide to the degree program.
  2. For all examinations for which credit transfer is requested, the application must be accompanied by the corresponding detailed course outlines. These documents can also be supplemented with information from the module manual if necessary. (The module handbook alone does not replace the detailed information on the course!)
  3. the certificates of achievement for the examinations to be credited (confirmed transcripts of records/ ToR).
(*Point 2 is not applicable for credit transfer within the framework of a double degree program at the Faculty of Business Administration)

Please note:
The crediting of modules is binding;
a later "withdrawal of crediting" is not possible! For study courses according to PStO 2015/2018 the following applies: The rules regarding attempts at grade improvement also apply to credited modules.

Credit recognition

Deadlines

  • Recognition of credits earned prior to enrollment in the Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Economics or a corresponding minor subject at LMU (e.g. in the case of a change of university or degree program) must be applied for in the first semester of the Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Economics or the minor subject.
  • A transfer of credits earned after enrollment in the Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Economics or a corresponding minor subject at LMU (e.g. in the case of studying abroad or double degree programs) must be applied for at the latest by the end of the 1st semester after earning the ECTS credits.
If you studied abroad for a whole year, you must apply for credit transfer no later than the end of the first semester after your return to LMU.

Advance requests for credit transfer for planned studies abroad

  • The possible credit transfer of courses planned as part of a study abroad program can be checked in advance.
  • Please send the Economic Exchange Office a course list with the course outlines/syllabi. For the individual courses, please also indicate the module in which the course is to be credited.
  • For capacity reasons, a maximum of 6 courses for a semester abroad or a maximum of 12 courses for a full academic year abroad can be checked in advance for possible credit transfer.
  • Due to the capacity restriction of a maximum of 6 courses per semester abroad, it is recommended that you only submit the preliminary request for possible credit transfer after you have received a place. The final course offerings of the respective university should also be known. Unfortunately, course lists from several universities cannot be checked in advance for possible credit transfer.
  • When selecting your classes, please also note that at some universities exchange students may only choose certain courses. There may also be special admission requirements for individual courses. Therefore clarify in advance with the host university which courses you are allowed to select from.
  • Advice from the Economic Exchange Office on credit transfer and integration of the semester/year abroad into your individual study plan is strongly recommended.

ERASMUS+ Learning Agreement

  • If your study abroad program is funded by ERASMUS+, please enter the courses clarified in your preliminary enquiry into the Learning Agreement (in Table B, please enter the courses in the form "Original course name at the host university → desired module at LMU"), have this signed by your host university and then send it to us in electronic form as a scan. If in doubt, please contact the Economics Exchange Office.
  • Please note that the Learning Agreement can only be signed if the possible recognition of all registered courses has been checked as part of a preliminary enquiry.
  • If there are any changes to the original Learning Agreement during your studies abroad, please enter these in the appropriate sections of the Learning Agreement and have this signed again by the relevant authorities. For new/additional courses, meaningful information (e.g. syllabus, module handbook) is again required.
Please note that changes to the course offerings (e.g. cancelled courses, postponements) must be confirmed by the host university.
  • Important: With ERASMUS+, only the courses that are included in the Learning Agreement can be recognised. It is not possible to credit other courses!
  • You then apply for credit transfer after your return to LMU as described in the section on recognition of exam achievements not taken at LMU
  • Part III of the Learning Agreement is not required for the Bachelor's degree program in Economics and the Master's degree program in Economics in consultation with the Department of International Affairs (RIA). A self-printed transcript of records with the recognised credits is sufficient as proof of credit transfer for the RIA.

LMU-Internal Credit Transfer

  • To apply for credit transfer for coursework that you have completed as part of a double degree program at LMU or that you would like to have transferred after changing degree programs, please simply submit the completed form for internal credit transfer (PDF, 362 KB) to ISC (Economics) Office. It is sufficient to send the application in electronic form (important: do not forget your signature).
  • For coursework and examinations that were not completed at the Faculty of Economics or the Munich School od Management (Business Administration) at LMU, please also submit a transcript of records.
  • Please be sure to observe the deadlines.

External Credit Transfer

You will need to fill out the following forms:

  1. Please fill in the form digitally
  2. Please state the semester in the following format "WS 20xx/20yy" or "SoSe 20xx"
  3. State the lecturer/examiner with highest academic degree
  4. State the intended module
  5. Print and sign the document
  • Transcript of Records
  • Syllabus / Outline and bibliography of achievements etc. (Important: Documents will only be accepted in German or English. For other languages, please submit a translation. Please submit copies of documents only! Documents will be destroyed after the procedure has been completed). If the possible recognition of the completed courses has already been checked as part of a preliminary enquiry, the syllabi / outline overviews do not have to be submitted again.
  • If you need a semester credit transfer certificate to apply for a study place, please indicate this on the application form.
  • Important: With ERASMUS+, only the courses that are included in the Learning Agreement can be recognised. It is not possible to credit other courses!
Important: The crediting procedure for all courses to be credited is carried out via the ISC (isc@econ.lmu.de) in the case of double degree programs and or a change of university or via the Economics Exchange Office in the case of studies abroad. It is sufficient to send the documents in electronic form (important: do not forget to sign the application). It is not necessary to contact individual chairs or faculties directly!
