Chairholder Prof. Dr. Peter Zentel is developing new approaches to increase the participation of people with intellectual disabilities in academic studies and teaching.

How can higher education be structured so that people with intellectual disabilities can actively participate in academic life? The Chair of Special Education - Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, in the Faculty of Psychology and Education at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München is addressing this question.
The goal is to break down existing barriers in teaching and learning and to develop new forms of collaboration in which people with intellectual disabilities can contribute their experiences and perspectives. In this way, the chair contributes to the further development of inclusive universities and promotes exchange between academia, practice, and self-advocacy.
The findings will also be incorporated into the IASSIDD European Congress 2026, which the chair will host in Munich from July 28–31, 2026. There, international researchers, professionals, and self-advocates will come together to discuss current developments and the future of inclusive education.
