Redirects and Short URLs

Is your website moving? Do you need a short URL for an event? Here we have compiled all the important information for you.

Redirects as Part of a Relaunch from Fiona to FirstSpirit

If you already have a website in Fiona that is now being relaunched in FirstSpirit, the URL of your website will also change as a result (see also Domain Concept). One or more redirects to the new URL in FirstSpirit can be set up for the previous URL of your website.

Please note: Redirects should only be used as a temporary solution!

Benefits

  • Users who have saved or bookmarked the previous URL will be automatically redirected to the new page.
  • In places where you cannot immediately communicate the new URL (e.g., analog flyers), the old URLs specified there will still redirect to the new website.
  • Users who visit the page will be redirected to the new page, and the new URL will be displayed in the browser bar.

Requesting Redirects

  • Usually, you notify us of desired redirects as part of the launch of a new website. Please use the corresponding page in the go-live form to submit redirects in a structured way for us to set up for you.
  • Redirects can also be set up after the website launch. In that case, please contact us directly.
  • If you require more than 5 redirects, please report them to us using the redirect table: redirect table (XLSX, 17 KB). You can also upload this in the go-live form or send it to us via email.

Important information about redirects

Redirects from LMU.de directly via the hostmaster
If you need a redirect on the central LMU.de website, you must request this directly from the LMU hostmaster .

For faculty-owned web servers
The majority of all LMU websites are delivered via the central server cluster. For these websites, the Internet Services Department can set up redirects based on the table. If your website is delivered via faculty-owned web servers, for example, redirects would have to be set up by the IT service groups in the faculties .

Short URLs for Websites

A short URL is a shortened version of a URL.

Advantages

  • Creates concise and memorable URLs for otherwise long paths.

Requesting Short URLs

Depending on the type of short URL needed, it can either be set up directly by the project admin or you may need to contact the Hostmaster.

1. URLs within your domain – via Project Admin

  • The website for which the short URL is to be created is within a FirstSpirit project that defines the leading domain, for example: www.meinefakultaet.lmu.de.
  • If you want a short URL within this domain, it can be set up by your project admin.
  • Contact your project admin - they can configure it within the FirstSpirit project for you and, if necessary, involve Department VI.5 Internet Services

2. Independent domain/email address, e.g., under lmu.de – via LMU Hostmaster

If you need your own URL or email address, for example, for an event:

  • Contact the LMU hostmaster to check whether your desired URL or, if applicable, email address is possible.
  • The Hostmaster coordinates the technical implementation with Department VI.5 if needed.
