Enrolment: How to get off to a good start at LMU

5 Aug 2026

Enrolment for the 2026/27 winter semester is now open. These tips should help prospective students avoid the most common pitfalls.

You’ve secured a place. All you need to do now is to enroll. For programs with no specific entry requirements, prospective students can still enroll for the 2026/27 winter semester until 18 September. Many applicants who have already received their offers of admission are also currently in the enrolment phase. If you know the most important steps to take and avoid common mistakes, you’ll be well prepared for your first semester.

It’s been a while since you finished your A-levels and the application deadlines have passed, but suddenly everything starts happening very quickly. Why? Because, when the letter of admission to your dream degree program arrives in the post, the next step on the path to this new chapter in your life – university – is immediately upon you: enrolment.

Since even minor oversights can delay the process, here is an overview of the most common pitfalls:

Mistake #1: Missed deadlines

At LMU, around 9,000 students begin their studies each winter semester. To spread out the enrolment process, different enrolment deadlines apply depending on the degree program. Anyone who has already applied for a degree program with restricted admission or gone through an aptitude or study orientation procedure will find their personal enrolment deadline in their letter of admission.

For degree programs with no admission restrictions and for which no prior application was required, the general enrolment period runs from 5 August to 18 September.
Further deadlines for international students or for applications for higher semesters are listed under the enrolment dates.

Mistake #2: Incomplete documents or missing signature

The first step towards enrolment is the online enrolment application. Once all the required details have been entered, the application must be printed out, signed and sent – together with the other supporting documents – by post to the Student Registry.

It is very important to submit all documents in full and in the prescribed format. Even minor formal errors can delay processing. One common stumbling block, for example, is a missing signature on the enrolment application. Similarly, it is not sufficient to submit an uncertified copy or a copy of an already certified copy instead of an officially certified copy.

Details of exactly which documents you require are provided under Enrolment steps and important documents. Prospective international students will find the documents they need on the International Office’s website.

Mistake #3: Incorrect entries on the health insurance certificate

Although the health insurance certificate is also part of the enrolment documentation, it requires special attention. It must be applied for from the health insurance provider and then sent directly to LMU.

To ensure that the electronic matching process works, all personal details must match the information provided in the enrolment application exactly. Even minor discrepancies – such as a missing hyphen in your surname or quoting the name of the university inaccurately – can prevent the certificate from being matched automatically.

It is best to apply for the health insurance certificate before completing your online enrolment application and to specifically request it for your studies at LMU.

Mistake #4: E-mail ends up in your spam folder

Even when all documents have been submitted, the enrolment process is still not complete. After your documents have been checked, you will receive an email from LMU setting out the next steps.

This will, for example, explain how to apply for your LMUcard and pay the semester fee. If these steps are overlooked or not completed by the relevant deadlines, your enrolment may be delayed or canceled.

You should therefore regularly check the processing status of your enrolment application and your e-mail inbox – including your spam folder – to ensure you do not miss any important information.
