In education and training, priority is given to using methods that replace animal testing – such as simulations or training models. However, where these are insufficient, animal-based procedures remain necessary. Veterinary students must also learn how to handle and work with live animals. Physicians and surgeons often practice complex procedures on animals before performing them on human patients.
