Continuation of registration

All students, without exception, need to apply for the continuation of registration in the required manner and within the specified time frame if they intend to remain registered at the same university during the following semester. The continuation of registration is not only a prerequisite in order to continue the current course of study during the following semester but also one if you choose to possibly change your degree program or degree major or request a leave of absence.

Students who do not fulfill their responsibility to apply for the continuation of registration will be expelled; as far as restricted admission degree programs and degree majors are concerned, the expulsion will also result in the loss of your place at the university.

You will find a QR-Code for your payment by bank transfer in your personal fee account.

Since, according to an update provided by the Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern, the additional fee for the semester ticket will be discontinued until further notice as of the Winter Semester 2023/24, only the basic fee must be paid in the amount of 85.00 Euro at present.

These fees are charged by the University according to Art. 121 Section 5 Clause 1 of BayHIG; the amount is then passed on to the Munich Student Union (Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern). The fee amount is determined by the Munich Student Union statute.

In general, all students must pay the fee due to the Munich Student Union amounting to a total

of EUR 85.00 in one lump sum by no later than 15 July 2024.

Any other exceptions for fee waivers will not be accepted.

If you register at LMU Munich and simultaneously at another university outside of Bavaria, you are always required to pay the fees at LMU Munich; whether you are required to pay the fees at the other university as well, you have to resolve with that particular university.

If you register at two universities in Bavaria at the same time, you only have to pay the fees at the university you first registered at. If this is not LMU Munich, then you must submit a request in writing for the continuation of registration at LMU Munich and enclose documentary evidence of the payment made to the other university (the payment confirmation and registration certificate issued by the other university).

At LMU Munich, the request in writing for the continuation of registration must be submitted by no later than 15 July 2024.

Please send your request (PDF, 119 KB) and the required documents to us by postal mail or drop them off at the mailbox at LMU‘s main entrance.

If you do not have any data privacy concerns, you can send us your completed request form and the set of required documents as an email attachment using only your LMU email address to the following address: RM.Studentenkanzlei@verwaltung.uni-muenchen.de

Please note:

  1. The size of your email attachment cannot exceed 5 MB.
  2. The request form and the set of required documents must be sent IN ONE SINGLE email only.
  3. Emails which you do not send from your LMU-campus email account will be deleted without further notice and processing.
  4. If you send us your request by email, you will receive a brief notification of receipt by email. As soon as your request has been processed, you can verify it via the online self-service portal at www.lmu.de/stud-online.

However, the following exceptions do apply:

Students who are registered in a joint degree program run by more than one university based on a cooperation agreement between two or more universities must pay the fees to the university whose registration law they are subject to (recipient university); in this case, reporting to the other university/universities is not required. This currently only applies to students in the following degree programs:

- Bachelor and master degree program "Professional Training", bachelor degree program "Geosciences" and master degree program "Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology": The recipient university is Technische Universität München.

- Bachelor, master and diplom degree program "Bioinformatics", master degree program "Geological Sciences", master degree program "Geomaterials and Geochemistry", master degree program "Geophysics", master degree program "Theoretical and Mathematical Physics" and "First section of state examination degree program for Medicine": the recipient university is LMU.

If the recipient university does not fall within the area of responsibility of the Munich Student Union, the amount of the fee and liability to pay is based on the provisions that apply to the recipient university.

This only applies to students in the master and Magister degree program "Aisthesis: Historical Art and
Literature Discourses" (recipient university: Katholische Universität Eichstätt) and the master degree program "Software Engineering" (recipient university: Universität Augsburg). Reporting to the other university/universities is not required in these cases.

a) When applying for the continuation of registration, please also keep in mind all regulations regarding the confirmation of health insurance coverage.

b) Prior to paying your fees, please use the online self-service function to check your account balance.
It will also provide you with information on whether your registration was approved and if not, as to the reasons why.

c ) In case your account balance shows an overpayment made during a previous semester, please subtract that amount from the fees due prior to making the actual payment (see: Beitragskonto: noch zu zahlender Betrag)!

Students who miss the deadline to apply for the continuation of registration will be expelled by the end of the current semester. Notifications of expulsion due to missing the deadline to apply for the continuation of registration for the Winter Semester 2024/25 will go into effect by the end of the Summer Semester 2024 (30 September 2024).

Please note that only the official German-language version of these terms is legally binding.
