Proof of health insurance coverage

In general, all students must provide proof of health insurance coverage to the University which states that they are either insured or not insured with a statutory health insurance company in Germany.

Exceptions: Doctoral students and students registered in the preparatory course Studienkolleg do not need to provide this proof as well as visiting students and visiting students in the study program for senior citizens.

Please contact the statutory health insurance company responsible for you and request the proof of health insurance coverage for your studies at LMU Munich. The health insurance company will transmit the proof of health insurance coverage directly to us by digital (LMU’s no. is: H0001279) means.

Please request the proof of health insurance coverage prior to completing your online registration application and explicitly inform your health insurance company that you intend to register at “LMU Munich.”

You may request the proof of health insurance coverage from a statutory health insurance company only (however, not from a private health insurance company!).

a) If you are covered under a mandatory or voluntary health insurance plan or are a dependent as part of a familiy plan with a statutory health insurance company in Germany, please request the proof of health insurance coverage from your statutory health insurance company.

b) If you are covered under a private insurance plan from a private health insurance company or are a dependent as part of a family plan, please request the proof of health insurance coverage from a statutory health insurance company. Submit the confirmation issued by your private health insurance company to the statutory health insurance company.

c) If you are covered under a health insurance plan in an EU or EEA member country, you will receive the proof of health insurance coverage from a statutory health insurance company in Germany upon presentation of your

EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) or

PEB (Provisorische Ersatzbescheinigung für die EHIC).

d) If you are covered under a health insurance plan in a country which is not a member country of the EU or EEA, please refer to the information provided by the International Office.

If you change either the health insurance company or the type of health insurance coverage during the course of your studies, you must request the statutory health insurance company responsible for you to transmit by digital means the new proof of health insurance coverage to LMU Munich (LMU’s no. is: H0001279).

The statutory health insurance companies notify LMU Munich if you missed paying your health insurance premiums. If this applies to you, your continuation of registration cannot be approved for the subsequent semester until your statutory health insurance company notifies us by digital means that you paid your missed premiums.
