Green Travel Award

Climate-friendly travel pays off – with the Green Travel Award, LMU supports its Erasmus+ students who choose an environmentally conscious way of travelling to their exchange destination.

Green Travel Award

Sustainability plays a central role in the Erasmus+ programme: students who travel in an environmentally friendly way for their stay abroad can already receive additional funding (“Green Travel”). The LMU Green Travel Award builds on this priority and goes one step further by recognizing particularly committed and creative examples of climate-friendly mobility.

The competition is held annually and is open to both outgoing and incoming Erasmus+ students at LMU who begin their mobility in the winter semester. A requirement for participation is that the journey to and from the destination is made predominantly (at least 50%) using sustainable modes of transport such as trains, buses, or carpooling.

Participants submit a report about their journey, describing their planning, challenges, and impressions. A special focus is placed on the intercultural learning experiences during the journey itself: international train or bus travel often creates encounters and situations that contribute to the development of important soft skills—such as flexibility, communication skills, and intercultural competence. Participants’ reports show that these experiences can further enrich international mobility—experiences that often do not arise in the same way when traveling solely by plane.

In each round of the competition, three prizes are awarded to outgoing students and three to incoming students. The annual submission deadline is October 31.

With the Green Travel Award, LMU aims to make sustainable travel more visible, inspire other students, and contribute to making international mobility more climate-friendly.

Erasmus Green Travel Award

To participate in the competition, you must:

  • have been selected for an Erasmus+ study exchange at LMU in the Winter Semester 2025/26 or for the entire 2026/27 academic year;
  • have applied for the Erasmus Green Travel grant based on your sustainable journey;
  • complete at least 50% of your total return journey using sustainable means of transport

You may wish to use the following questions as a guide:

  • Why did you choose to travel sustainably?
  • What challenges did you encounter during the planning and the journey itself?
  • Which competencies or skills did you develop?
  • Which resources, apps, or platforms were particularly helpful?
  • What advice would you give to future Erasmus students?
  • How did this journey change your understanding of sustainable mobility?
  • What differences or challenges related to sustainable mobility did you observe across Europe?
  • What could universities do to better support sustainable travel?

Please note

The evaluation focuses less on the length, complexity, or "adventurousness" of your journey and more on:

  • the quality of your reflection
  • your engagement with sustainability
  • your learning experiences and
  • the practical value of your contribution for other students

Purely descriptive travel reports without reflection or concrete insights will receive less consideration during the selection process.

Where possible, please conclude your submission with a brief summary covering:

  • My most important learning experience:
  • My most important tip for future Erasmus students:
  • The most helpful resource or platform:
  • What universities could improve to promote sustainable mobility:

As part of the competition, we are particularly interested in your development of Green Competencies, such as:

  • sustainable and responsible behaviour
  • problem-solving skills
  • adaptability and resilience
  • reflective decision-making
  • intercultural communication
  • collaboration and social responsibility and
  • practical knowledge of sustainable mobility

  • Submissions will be assessed according to the following criteria:

    • Reflection on sustainability and Green Competencies
    • Practical value for future Erasmus students
    • Commitment, initiative, and problem-solving ability
    • Critical reflection and personal learning experiences
    • Quality and clarity of presentation

  • The Sustainable Erasmus+ Travel Green Skills Repository can help you reflect on your learning experiences and sustainability competencies.
  • We also recommend Go2Rail. LMU is proud to be part of the Go2UNIS network. Go2Rail is a non-profit start-up that supports students in discovering Europe by train. With the Go2Rail Smart Bot, you can connect with other students travelling along your route, plan journeys together, and make overnight train travel safer.
  • You may also find the European Commission's GreenComp – European Sustainability Competence Framework helpful when preparing your report. The framework provides guidance on the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that support sustainable action and can help you reflect on and describe your sustainability-related learning experiences and competencies.

Experience Reports

The following reports provide insights into the diverse experiences of participants. They can serve as inspiration for planning your own journey and offer practical tips for organizing a sustainable stay abroad.
