Getting around
LMU’s main campus, located right in the heart of Munich, is an integral part of the lively city and is easily accessible by public transport — or by bicycle.
Biking and public transportation
In a five-kilometer radius in Munich, you will travel more quickly on a bike than by any other means of transport. With approximately 1,200 kilometers of marked bike lanes and some 22,000 bike stands, Munich’s infrastructure is first-rate.
You definitely won’t need a car since public transportation is so efficient, and parking spaces are very limited within Munich.
The Münchner Verkehrsverbund (MVV), Munich’s public transportation authority, offers an extensive and very reliable public transportation network of buses, trams, subways (U-Bahn), and local trains (S-Bahn). The network within Munich is called the MVG. You will find complete details in multiple languages on connections, prices, timetables, route planning, and everything else on the MVV website, including specific information for students.
Student transportation tickets
Basic semester ticket
MVV also offers a season ticket for the city’s public transportation network. Every LMU student who is registered at LMU and has paid the obligatory semester fee will benefit from this ticket, which entitles you to travel within the MVV network (zones M–6) at the following times only:
- Monday through Friday from 6 p.m. – 6 a.m. the following day
- No time restrictions on Saturday, Sunday, public holidays, and on 24 and 31 December. The 69,40 euros cost is already included in the semester fee.
Be sure to carry your student ID with the MVV logo on it and an official photo ID at all times when using public transport.
IsarCard Semester 24/7
- If you wish to benefit from unlimited travel within the entire MVV network, you can top up your basic semester ticket and purchase the IsarCard Semester 24/7. This card costs 201,60 euros and is valid for one semester.
- You can purchase the IsarCard Semester 24/7 at MVG ticket machines or kiosks selling MVG tickets (e.g., at underground stations). Present your student ID at the kiosk or type your matriculation number into the ticket machine to buy a ticket.
