Exmatriculation

At the time of your exmatriculation, your rights and duties as a student and member of the university will end.

Please note: The particular semester during which your exmatriculation becomes effective, will count towards your current overall number of university semesters attended, as well as towards subject-specific semesters or leave-of absence semesters in case you applied for a leave of absence. Students cannot be reimbursed for any fees paid for the semester during which their exmatriculation becomes effective.

Upon exmatriculation, you will receive a letter of exmatriculation together with a Confirmation of period of study intended for gesetzliche deutsche Rentenversicherung as well as a Confirmation of programs studied.

Submitting a request for exmatriculation

Students themselves may, at any time, submit a request for exmatriculation. The request must be submitted to SU 2 Academic Registrar either by post or by dropping them in the mailbox located at the main entrance of the LMU. It is not possible to request exmatriculation by email.

In urgent cases, you can apply for exmatriculation in person. In this case, you must make an appointment online in advance for a personal visit at SU 2 - Academic Registrar.

a) to become effective immediately

Your request for exmatriculation effective immediately can only be processed, if the following documents are submitted by postal mail:

  • the LMUcard as your Student ID Card, which will be invalidated and retained.

A request for exmatriculation will only be approved if the LMUcard is submitted as your Student ID Card. The LMUcard will not be returned to you. Therefore we kindly ask you to remove any remaining cash deposits.

If you apply for immediate exmatriculation up to five weeks after the start of lecture period, you are entitled to a refund of the fees, which have already been paid for that semester (see Studierendenwerk statutes). If the necessary requirements are met, the refund will be made automatically.

b) to go into effect on the last day of the current semester

Your request for exmatriculation to go into effect on the last day of the current semester can only be processed, if the following documents are submitted:

Please note: You may continue to use the LMUcard as your Student ID Card until the end of the current semester. You must submit it to the University in time, however, for the Academic Registrar to receive it, at the latest, five weeks from the start of the following semester (5 May or 5 November). Otherwise, you can no longer be reimbursed for those fees which you already paid for the following semester! (see Studerendenwerk statutes) Please also remember to remove any remaining cash deposits from your card.

Exmatriculation by act of law

In specific circumstances, exmatriculation will also take place by act of law or will be performed ex officio by the University.

  • Students will be exmatriculated by act of law effective on the last day of the particular semester during which they passed their final examination for their degree program.

This form of exmatriculation will not take place, if you meet the requirements for Continuation of registration for the subsequent semester and if you request on time a Change of subject for a different degree program (e.g. a postgraduate degree program or another bachelor degree program, etc.).

If you already applied for the continuation of registration but decide to (no longer) want to request a change of subject, you can ask for the repayment of those fees which you already paid for as part of your continuation of registration.

Please note: You may continue to use the LMUcard as your Student ID Card until the end of the current semester. You must submit it to the University in time, however, for the Academic Registrar to receive it, at the latest, five weeks from the start of the following semester ( 5 May or 5 November). Otherwise, you can no longer be reimbursed for those fees which you already paid for the following semester! (see Studerendenwerk statutes) Please also remember to remove any remaining cash deposits from your card.

Exmatriculation ex officio

Students will be exmatriculated by the university ex officio

  • if, according to examination regulations, they failed to pass a mandatory pre-examination, intermediate examination or final examination on their last and final attempt or if, due to reasons they themselves are responsible for, they do not meet the prerequisites to submit an application to take one of these examinations. (This form of exmatriculation will not take place, if they meet the requirements for Continuation of registration and if they on time request a Change of subject for a different degree program),
  • if they did not apply for Continuation of registration in the required manner and within the required time frame,
  • if they did not submit their formal proof of health insurance for students within the required time frame,
  • if an obstacle to registration arises afterwards,
  • if there are facts proving that their registration or continuation of registration occurred improperly.

(see Studierendenwerk statutes) Please also remember to remove any remaining cash deposits from your card.
